M4 traffic chaos as incident causes huge tailback

There was queuing traffic along the M4 in Newport on Thursday evening as one lane closed due to a broken down heavy goods vehicle. A lane closure was put in place on the M4 junction 24 eastbound to the dedicated off slip towards the A449, causing traffic delays.

From junction 24 Coldra to junction 26 of the motorway there was queuing traffic. Gwent Police asked drivers to avoid the area and find alternative routes.

A spokesperson for the force said: "We received a report of a broken down heavy goods vehicle on the A449 slip road from the M4 at around 2.25pm on Thursday 15 January. Officers are in attendance to assist with traffic management and the lane closure."

Elsewhere along the M4, there was slow traffic due to emergency repairs on the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge westbound from junction 22 M49 to junction 23 M48. One lane was closed to allow work to be carried out.

17:05 - Broken down vehicle cleared and lane reponed

Traffic has returned to normal as all lanes are now open on the M4 at junction 24 A449, Coldra. The accident has now cleared.

Further along the M4, one lane is closed due to emergency repairs at junction 25A A4042.

17:01 - M4 Newport overnight closures

Local diversions will be in place overnight as repair work is carried out on two areas of the M4 near Newport. Junction 25A Grove Park off-slip travelling westbound and junction 25 Caerleon off-slip travelling westbound will be closed from 8pm until 6am tonight.

16:50 - Short delays along the M4

AA traffic news has reported delays of around just three minutes but contiune to increase with an average speed of 20mph along the M4 in Newport due to the lane closures.

AA said: "Delays of three minutes and delays increasing on M4 Eastbound between J25 B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon) and J24 A449 (Coldra). Average speed 20 mph."

16:46 - Fallen tree closes major road

The A466 in both directions is closed due to a fallen tree from Bigsweir Bridge (Llandogo) to Highbury Road (Redbrook).

Traffic is coping well in the area.

16:40 - Further closures on the same stretch of M4

Emergency repair works have closed another section of the M4 eastbound in Newport from Grove Park to Caerleon.

The M4 eastbound entry slip road at junction 25A is closed. Lane one is closed between junction 25A and junction 25 eastbound for repair works.

16:33 - Broken down vehicle causes traffic chaos

16:19 - M4 bridge closure due to damages

Lane one of the M4 Prince of Wales Bridge westbound is currently closed due to a damaged bridge joint. The lane will remain closed throughout the day as emergency repairs are carried out.

Overnight this will switch to a lanes one and two closure between 8pm to 6am to allow for detailed inspections and repairs to be carried out.

16:15 - Crash closes M4

Trafffic management site Inrix has reported that a crash has closed the M4.

They reported: "One lane closed and queueing traffic due to accident on M4 Eastbound from J25 B4596 Caerleon Road (Caerleon) to J24 A449 (Coldra)."
