The separate problems - both centred on faults with underground cables - resulted in Newcastle College announcing it was shut on Wednesday morning. In the Potteries and the Norton Co-op on Knypersley Road was closed yesterday morning before being able to get back open.

Today and Newcastle College is shut again, this time due to the heating system being 'not yet fully operational'. National Grid has told StokeonTrentLive how the outage affecting the college also impacted 95 customers on and around Knutton Lane. Most had their power back just before 5am while a generator was connected to the college just before 11am yesterday.

In Norton and another fault with an underground cable affected 55 homes from just after 7.55pm on Tuesday. Crews worked through the night with 53 back on just after 5.20am with the remaining two seeing power restored just after 11.20am.

A spokesperson said: "We appreciate that losing power is inconvenient for homes and businesses and would like to thank customers for their patience while our teams worked to resolve these faults."
