Transport for London is currently exploring plans to transform 10 bus routes across the capital. The authority says these changes will improve the network by making local bus routes run both faster and more smoothly.

Five of these changes are centred around Meridian Water in Edmonton to accommodate 10,000 homes set to be built in the area over the next 20 years. The disused brownfield site next to the North Circular Road is undergoing a major redevelopment to address the shortage of homes.

With hundreds of people having already moved in, TfL is making changes to address some parts of the development currently being 400 metres from the nearest bus stop. The destination of the 476 from King's Cross to Northumberland Park will be extended to Meridian Water, while from the other direction the W8 route will now serve the community instead of the 192.

The latter change will increase capacity due to the W8 being a double-decker service. TfL is also exploring options to withdraw the 349 and restructure two other routes to simplify other parts of the North London network, along shortening two journeys through Central London to limit delays. The transport authority is also looking at reviving the former 10 route to travel between Battersea Bridge and Mildmay in Islington.

Below is a roundup of all 10 bus route changes TfL is currently consulting Londoners about, along with plans to withdraw the 349.

Roundup of the potential changes to London bus routes

476: Extension of 476 from Northumberland Park to Harbet Road in Meridian Water. TfL says the extension is short and can be accommodated without affecting the reliability.

341: Shortening of the route to terminate in Northumberland Park instead of Meridian Water. Extending the route to serve the whole new development would significantly increase its length and make it harder to run services reliably, TfL says, but the N341 will be lengthened to mirror the new 476 endpoint.

444: The 444 will turn off the North Circular and travel into Meridian Water to serve new roads and bus stops before returning onto the major route.

W8: The proposal involved restructuring the route to run between Chase Farm Hospital and Tottenham Hale Station via Meridian Water. The W8's use of double decker buses will ensure there is sufficient capacity in the new development. Enfield Council has plans for a bus only road to run through the heart of Meridian Water.

192: TfL wants to change the 192 to terminate at Lee Valley Athletics Centre instead of its current route to 192. This is a single decker service and also runs less frequently than the W8 which currently serves the area.

259: Londoners are being consulted on changing the 259 from Edmonton Green to King's Cross to instead run between Ponders End and Holloway. TfL says it will provide a new direct link between both areas while reducing duplication on other routes on Caledonian Road, but it will mean some passengers will lose their connection from King's Cross.

279: Similar reasons are behind the proposed 279 changes. It currently runs between Waltham Cross and Manor House Station but transport bosses are looking to change this latter termination point to Stamford Hill.

TfL says this will better address the demand in the area, but it will mean passengers lose direct access to Manor House and Seven Sisters Road.

349: The 349 which runs between Ponders End and Stamford Hill will be withdrawn under these plans due to the overlap with new 259 and 279 journeys.

19: To avoid congestion in Central London TfL is looking for the 19 route from Finsbury Park to terminate at Victoria station instead of Battersea. The route will divert from its current route at Hyde Park Corner.

38: The 38 route is set to terminate in Holborn instead of running its current distance to Victoria station from Clapton. The endpoint of Clapton Bus Garage which is currently Monday to Friday only will change to Clapton Pond.

10: After changing the 19 route, TfL is looking to re-introduce the 10 to run between Battersea Bridge and Mildmay in Islington.

Consultations for all changes are open on the TfL website. Affected passengers are encouraged to share their views on the proposal.
