A3 crash 'sees 3 horses killed' - updates

The A3 was plunged into turmoil this morning (Thursday, January 15) after a lorry collision has reportedly left three horses dead.

Surrey Police raced to the scene at about 1.40am, to reports of a lorry hitting two horses, with a third horse smashing into a car shortly after, reports The Express. However, the exact details are yet to be confirmed.

National Highways says The "A3 in Surrey remains closed northbound between the A247 Burntcommon and the B2039 Ockham due to a collision."

It is not clear why the horses were on the motorway.

Recovery work is underway and the A3 is still closed Northbound from A247 (Burntcommon) to B2039 Ockham Road North (Ockham Park).

Emergency diversions are still in place.

A spokesperson for National Highways said at 1pm: "Specialist clean up works remain ongoing on the A3 northbound between the A247 Burntcommon and the B2039 Ockham following the earlier collision. Delays on approach to the closure have eased."

A Surrey Police spokesperson said: "We have now had an update from Surrey Police on the A3 closure Officers were called to the location at around 1:40am this morning (Thursday, January 15) following reports of two loose horses involved in a collision with a lorry on the A3. Shortly after, a separate call came in regarding a collision with a car and horse.

"Sadly, three horses were found deceased at the scene upon officer arrival. Officers are engaging with the drivers of both vehicles as part of ongoing enquiries."

There are delays of around 60 minutes.

Traffic cameras show huge queues on the A3 as highways teams can look to carefully remove the deceased horses from the main road.
