A tragic scene involving a lesbian couple has resurfaced after being cut from the final version of Love Actually.

The festive film first hit cinemas in 2003 and each year many people sit down to watch it on the run up to Christmas.

But those who think they know the movie inside and out may want to think again because a particular love story was scrapped at the last minute.

The plot featured a stern headmistress - played by Anne Reid - who returns from work to tend to her terminally ill partner Geraldine - played by Frances de la Tour.

The twosome were linked to the wider story by the subplot involving Emma Thompson, whose son was a pupil at Reid's school.

As the headmistress tells her visibly sick partner about her day, it's clear that Geraldine is full of spirit despite her illness.

The pair share just two short scenes together, with the second one featuring Geraldine coughing in bed before being comforted by the headmistress.

Scene three - which again was cut from the film - sadly sees Emma Thompson 's character Karen announcing that Geraldine had passed away.

Director Richard Curtis has explained that the story was meant to show that each person has their own complicated tale of love.

Love Actually dominated the box office when it was released in November 2003.

It featured an all-star cast including Hugh Grant, Liam Neeson, Colin Firth and Keira Knightley .
