A 'perfect' period drama that is celebrated for its five star cast is now streaming on Netflix.

All episodes of Turn: Washington Spies are now a part of the streamer's library as of today (December 10). The historical series is based on the book Washington's Spies: The Story of America's First Spy Ring , a history of the Culper Ring written by Alexander Rose.

The show's main story covers events from 1776 to 1781 and features a farmer from New York and his childhood friends. They form an unlikely group of spies called the Culper Ring, which works to help turn the tide during the American Revolutionary War.

It's synopsis says: "The series goes beyond the battlefront to a conflict involving everyday men and women, taking place in a cryptic world of double agents, covert operations and code-breaking. It revolves around Abe Woodhull, a young farmer torn between loyalty to his Tory background and respect for those who fight for the Patriot cause.

It continues "Living on British-occupied Long Island, Abe joins a group of his childhood friends to form what becomes known as the Culper Ring, a spy network charged with sniffing out British military strategy. Under the direction of Gen. Washington, Abe and his fellow agents help turn the war to the Continentals' favour, and their daring efforts ultimately serve as the foundation for modern espionage."

The main cast is headed up by Jamie Bell as Abraham Woodhull. Bell is most well known for starring in Billy Elliott when he was just 14 and making his screen debut. He since appeared in films including King Kong, The Adventures of Tintin and Snowpiercer.

He is joined by The Babadook's Daniel Henshall, Homeland actor Seth Numrich and Burn Gorman who has appeared in Torchwood and Game of Thrones.

It holds a respectable 81% rating overall and according to critical consensus only gets better as it goes along. That is at least considering it went from a score of just 54% with its debut season to 90% for season two and a perfect 100% for season three.

Fans still claim it is one of their favourites in the genre and that they watch it multiple times. One sharing their thoughts online, simply stated: "Perfect and a five star star cast."

Another claimed: "This show for me is a mix of Breaking Bad meets Downton Abbey with some of HBO's The Wire. The main character keeps getting himself deeper and deeper into trouble and every time you think he's about to meet his end a crazy twist happens."

They continued: "Some of my favourite scenes are just the witty dialogue between characters. The show has very likeable characters on both the British and American side which is similar to how The Wire was written. Overall very entertaining and bingeable. A lot of historically accurate information presented although I'm sure there was plenty of creative liberty taken as well. A must watch!"

A third posted: "Absolutely outstanding! The writing, acting, directing, cinematography, etc., are the best I have ever seen! Even though some of the story has been fictionalised, the historical content is delivered brilliantly and accurately. I simply cannot say enough about this production. I could (and have) watched it many times and I will keep it in my video library forever!"

While someone else said: "Absolutely stunning. I enjoyed all seasons and didn't want it to end. Everything about this series was intriguing and I couldn't get enough. Excellent, excellent job to all producers, writers, actors, costume designers, make up, hair professionals EVERYONE involved."
