It's may feature Father Christmas and a cameo from the Easter Bunny, but The Nightmare Before Christmas also boasts some decidedly creepy characters.

There's (anti) hero Jack Skellington, that Clown With The Tear-Away Face, Doctor Finklestein, the Vampire Brothers and, of course, THE OOGIE BOOGIE MAN.

And who didn't want to dive behind the sofa when he came on the screen...

So given this spine-chilling cast and spooky storyline, The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Halloween film, right?

Well, maybe not.

The whole film is admittedly about Christmas, takes place in Christmas Town in the run-up to Christmas and, of course, has Christmas in the title.

So what is it - a Halloween film, or a Christmas film?

It's not exactly It's a Wonderful Life, but nor is it Saw, and therein lies the debate, which has been raging along on Twitter.

But the one person who can settle this debate once and for all has in fact stepped forward to do so.

The film's director, Henry Selick, was asked the Halloween/Christmas question during a Q&A at Colorado's Telluride Horror Show film festival.

It is ever-so-slightly Christmassy(Image: Nightmare Before Christmas)

His answer?

It's a Halloween movie.

Sorry ,Team Christmas, but as Selick pointed out, it's a film about Halloween, the residents of Halloween Town and how they feel about Christmas.
