The Grand Tour viewers struggled to hide their emotions as the hit show came to an end after six series.

Hosts Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May said their final goodbye last week after the series followed the trio embark on a worldwide mission to meet different car giants. During the last episode the hosts headed out in cars that they have always wanted to own. The programme which airs on Prime, has been gathering fans since 2016 after they bowed out of hosting Top Gear.

And this is why fans saw their departure from the show as an end of an era. Taking to X, one viewer wrote: "The final episode of The Grand Tour, I'm not crying you are. Good luck and thank you for the good times Jeremy Clarkson, James May & Richard Hammond. It's been one hell of a ride." A second person added: "I am still crying!" Meanwhile another person penned that the final episode was a fitting way to mark the end of the programme. They said: "Perfect ending. And very cleverly done.'

Ahead of the final show, Richard was being interviewed on This Morning and claimed he was struggling with the thought of the show coming to an end. He recalled his career working with James and Jeremy and said: "It went berserk and we didn't know it would go out of control. It feels really weird I can't get my head round it. I've been doing this for 22 years because of that partnership. I'll be forever grateful to Jeremy and James."

He added: "It's not sunk in yet. I reckon six months from now I'll wake up every morning and cry. When I got the job, I was 31, I burst out crying when they called. I said to my wife, 'this is going to change everything,' and it did." Producer Andy Wilman told The Edinburgh TV Festival that filming the last episode was "quite weepy."

When asked why the hosts decided to call it a day after six series, he said: "We are getting to the point where enough is enough. On top of that, there is the sense that we want to end things on our own terms. It had to come to an end and we wanted to be the ones who called it." The last episode was filmed last September and the trio returned to Kubu Island in Botswana, which was the location of their first episode. Andy said the episode was "deliberately gentle" as the presenters wanted to return to basics.
