Normal People star Daisy Edgar-Jones is set to star opposite Nicholas Hoult in a “wry relationship comedy” coming to Disney+.

Also set to be released on Hulu in the United States, the six-part series comes from the mind of Poor Things and The Great writer Tony McNamara.

Mosquito is described as a “sardonic look at a young couple’s relationship” starring two of the UK’s biggest stars.

Edgar-Jones and Hoult will portray newlyweds Kate and Ed who are plagued by an unwanted new arrival.

A logline for the series reveals “[their] secrets begin to reveal as daily life chips away at the personas they present…all started by an intrusive mosquito.”

McNamara, who is also executive producing the series, said: “I’m thrilled and excited to work with and team up two of the best actors around. I can’t wait to go make absurd comedy with them.”

Hoult previously teamed with McNamara for The Great, co-starring Elle Fanning, and the Oscar-winning period drama film The Favourite.

He is also well-known for his roles in Skins, Superman and the X-Men franchise.

Edgar-Jones was BAFTA and Golden Globe nominated for her role as Marianne in the BBC’s 2020 sensation Normal People, based on the bestselling novel by Sally Rooney and co-starring Paul Mescal.

She has also appeared alongside Glen Powell in the disaster film Twisters, Sebastian Stan in cannibal thriller Fresh and Andrew Garfield in the true crime drama Under the Banner of Heaven.

Disney Television Studios president Eric Schrier and Disney+’s Head of Content Angela Jain said: “Tony is one of the most talented writers working in film and television today, with a legacy of incredible success at Disney.

“He has an unmatched ability to bring fascinating and complex stories to life weaving sharply written, intricate dialogue with signature dark-humour and complexity.

“Partnering with him on Mosquito is an incredible step forward for our local original content and reinforces our ambitions in the UK.”

Disney+ has announced that it will up its annual subscription by 10% on September 30. Until then, shoppers can still lock into its £89.90 annual plan, which works out less than 30p a day.

McNamara’s other upcoming projects include an adaptation of the comic book series Avengelyne, directed by Olivia Wilde and Margot Robbie, and he is also reportedly co-writing a new Star Wars film with Taika Waititi.

His most recent film, The Roses, loosely remade the 1989 film The War of the Roses with Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman as a feuding married couple.

Filming on Mosquito will begin in 2026 and the series does not currently have a release date.
