Police investigating the knife attack on tennis star Petra Kvitova have revealed she was slashed as part of a blackmail plot.

Kvitova - who has won two Wimbledon titles - was badly injured when she tried to defend herself against a knife wielding intruder at her home in Prostejov, Czech Republic, last month.

Now police investigating the attack have officially classified it as attempted blackmail, reports local media.

Official police spokesman Frantisek Korinek revealed the crime's classification during an update briefing on the investigation.

No further details emerged about what the attempted blackmail was over or why Kvitova, 26, had been attacked.

All police would say is that the case had been transferred to regional detectives who were investigating a case of alleged blackmail.

Kvitova suffered career threatening injuries to tendons and nerves in her dominant left hand.

Earlier this month she announced on social media that she was on the road to recovery.

Accompanied by a snap of her smiling in a coffee shop, she wrote: "Hello everyone, I wanted to let you know a little bit of good news."

She added: "I finally had all the stitches removed from my hand this week, which means it is healing well after the operation.

"I am happy it is just me and my hand now. I'm working very hard on my rehab and staying positive as always."

The tennis ace needed a four-hour operation to repair the damage to her hand following the attack at her flat on 20th December.

Police say they have not yet identified the attacker, who faces up to 12 years in jail if convicted.

The local Prostejov tennis club has promised a 100,000-CZK (3,160-GBP) reward for information leading to his arrest.
