Oh, Freddy...(Image: )

Sad as it is, the name Freddy Adu has become something of a byword for lost promise.

Many years ago, in the halcyon days of the mid-noughties, Freddy was tipped to become the next big thing - the boy who would carry the hopes and dreams of the USA into a brighter footballing future. Plus he was awesome on Football Manager . Like, seriously. Really awesome.

Unfortunately, it's all gone a bit wrong since then - Freddy's personal downward spiral has swirled via Benfica, Turkish minnows Çaykur Rizespor, mid-table Finnish club Kuopion Palloseura and now the Tampa Bay Rowdies. It's a tragic tale.

Especially since he's now doing really, really rubbish endorsements for hoovers.

Whoever set up this promotion clearly has a taste for profound melancholy. Freddy stands forlorn here, hunched over a cleaning device which is somehow both inanimate and vaguely reproachful, hoovering with absolute zero enthusiasm by a gloomy pot plant - it's pretty grim. Freddy has tweeted: "No mess can beat me thanks to my new Hoover USA Cordless 2-In-1 Stick and Handheld Vacuum". Unfortunately, it looks like the mess has beaten him. The metaphorical mess that is this sorrowful hoover ad.

Inevitably, this tweet has now gone viral. Cruel and capricious as ever, the people of Twitter are now using Freddy's hoovering as a source of humour.

Many are also delivering some pretty obvious hoover-based puns and punchlines. You might think a hoover company would have seen this coming.

We think we can safely say that this ad was never, ever going to be a good idea - in fact, it's completely bizarre. Why anyone thought a crestfallen Freddy Adu would help to sell a vacuum cleaner is entirely beyond us.

Do we really want to live in a world where Freddy Adu does desolate hoover adverts? No, no we do not.

Will Freddy Adu ever reignite his career?

Will Freddy Adu ever reignite his career?

Yes! Keep the faith!

I don't know, but Las Vegas Lights doesn't even sound like a real team

No, seriously mate
