Matthew Ravenscroft – Samuels’ grandson – scored in the game and later unveiled a moving T-shirt tribute. It read: β€œRIP grandad – this goal is for you.”

The 76-year-old had a heart attack as he cheered the U11s to victory in the Staffordshire and District League the week before.

Phoenix manager Richard Wood is married to Mr Davies’ daughter Louise, who was also watching from the sidelines. Mr Wood said: β€œSamuel always stood in the same spot, someone noticed he’d collapsed and we ran over but he died.

β€œIt was horrible for the lads but they played this match in his memory. He would have been so proud.
