Patrick Mahomes is on the brink of smashing two records held by Dan Marino this season, and he could achieve this feat in the Kansas City Chiefs' upcoming clash against the Los Angeles Chargers.

In Sunday Night Football's showdown with the Chargers, Mahomes has the chance to equal Marino's career touchdown passes for a player in their first eight seasons (241), despite the Chiefs superstar not playing in his rookie season.

Not only could Mahomes overtake Marino in second place overall in that category, but he is also poised to break the record - currently held by Peyton Manning with 244. The Chiefs quarterback currently stands at 238 - needing just six more in the final five games of the year.

Mahomes is almost certain to surpass Marino's record for passing yards by a player through eight years (31,416) - requiring a mere 13 yards to outdo him in the Chargers game.

Despite not having his best statistical season so far in 2024, Mahomes has steered the Chiefs to an impressive 11-1 record with five games remaining - positioning them as favourites to clinch the AFC in the regular season and secure the top spot, meaning the playoffs would have to run through their Arrowhead Stadium.

If this happens, Mahomes and the Chiefs will remain the favourites to return to the Super Bowl - where they'll vie to become the first ever team to win three consecutive championships.

The Chiefs quarterback has smashed several records in his first seven years as a starter, being the fastest quarterbacks in numerous touchdowns, yards and win totals.

Despite his brilliance though, Mahomes has had his struggles in the regular season over the last two years - throwing 25 interceptions in his last 26 games.

However, he's more than compensated for that with his big-play abilities, holding the NFL record for passing yards per game at 290.8. But he'll face the NFL's best scoring defense on Sunday, with the Chargers holding teams to just 15.7 points per game under Jim Harbaugh, with the team winning five of their last six games and looking set to secure one of the final spots in the playoffs.
