The Dallas Cowboys quarterback has heaped praise on his former team-mate ahead of a potential return to the NFL

Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott has revealed why free agent Ezekiel Elliott would be an asset to the New England Patriot s.

Elliott is currently without a team after being released by the Cowboys in April. The running back saw his six year stint at the Dallas franchise come to an end due to salary cap reasons and a declining run of form.

The 28-year-old has since been thrown a lifeline after being granted an opportunity to visit the Patriots. The news is something that Prescott will be all too happy to hear having been teammates with Elliott since the duo were drafted into the NFL back in 2016.

When Elliott was released, Prescott was quick to praise his contributions to the team that go beyond his on field attributes. "Zeke's a guy that, man, he played this game - did everything about this game - the right way," he said.

"Had fun; did that. But when it was time to lock in, when it was time to focus and to give everything that you had, and to show your teammates and show the younger guys what really mattered and how to get things done, Zeke was a guy to follow."

Prescott's comments will be music to the ears of the Patriots head coach Bill Belichick and provide a strong endorsement ahead of a potential move. But it's not the first time that the Louisiana-born quarterback has heaped praise on his former team mate.

Speaking via the Dallas Morning News following Elliott's departure from the Cowboys, Prescott said: "That’s my best friend. We’ll continue to work, continue to push each other.

"He looks great. I’m excited for whatever opportunity he has coming up, and I’m always his biggest fan."

Elliott had a disappointing year by his standards for the Cowboys, registering career lows of with 867 yards on 231 attempts, it was the first time the 28-year-old had failed to surpass 1,000 total yards.

Adding more insult to injury his 3.8 yards per carry average was a seven year low. It was the first time in his career that he had been below the 4.0 mark.

However, it wasn't all bad news. The Patriots have set their sights on a veteran to pair with 25-year-old Rhamondre Stevenson, and this ticks a lot of boxes for Elliott.

He registered 12 touchdowns last season and proved his effectiveness in the red zone. That, matched with Prescott's high praise, could be enough to seal the deal ahead of the new season.
