Ex-professional basketball player Andre Emmett was shot dead on Monday at the age of 37.

The former NBA star was killed in Dallas, Texas, after two men approached his car armed with a handgun.

Dallas Police confirmed Emmett was sat behind the wheel of his vehicle outside his home at around 2:30am when the firearm was pulled, leading to an altercation.

Emmett was then gunned down as he tried to flee the scene, but the police are yet to determine a motive.

A passerby found Emmett and called 911 but he was pronounced dead at hospital.

The former shooting guard played college ball in the state for Texas Tech under coach Bob Knight, before being picked 35th in the 2004 NBA draft.

A journeyman-like career saw him play for a number of different sides, including spells with the Memphis Grizzlies and the New Jersey Nets.

His latest appearances in the game came in the BIG3 league, where his displays put him in contention for the MVP award.

A statement from the league said: β€œThe BIG3 is in a state of shock over the sudden and tragic death of Andre Emmett.

β€œHis kindness towards others and easy-going demeanour made him a joy to be around.

β€œOur thoughts are with Andre's family and friends during this difficult time.”

Texas Tech University paid tribute to their former player, tweeting: "Thank you for the competitor you were on the court and the incredible person you were off of it.

"Thank you for the many amazing memories you helped create. "Thank you for inspiring the entire Texas Tech family. "Rest In Peace, Dre."
