BLUE TOPAZ (2.34, Nap) looks a gem of a bet in the SprayCladUK NE Ltd Mares' Maiden Hurdle at Sedgefield on Thursday.

A wind operation seems to have made a significant difference on the Fergal O'Brien-trained five-year-old as he improved to win a bumper on the course over 2m1f last month.

Always going well, the son of Blue Bresil surged clear of the field two furlongs out and ran on well to win at a canter by four and a quarter lengths from William Yeats.Today's trip of 2m3f should hold no fears for my selection who should strip fitter than most of his rivals. And as a former Point-to-Pointer, he is expected to improve again over obstacles.

Earlier on the card, LUNAR ORBIT (1.24, nb) could prove hard to beat in the Michael Watson Civils & Groundworks Juvenile Hurdle. The son of Sea The Moon, trained by Warren Greatrex (above), was third last time out when finishing five and a half lengths behind Galactique at Fontwell. My selection kept on readily, so the extra one and a half furlongs of today's trip should suit him well — as proven by his decent second on his hurdles debut over the course and distance in September. His connections will also be hoping that recent wind surgery will help him too.
