The Kentucky Derby favourite who was scratched by vets hours before the race reportedly failed a drug test that has still to be adjudicated.
โ
Forte, who was withdrawn because of concerns about a bruised right front foot, was the top fancy for Americaโs biggest horse race due to his record of six wins from seven starts, including at the Breedersโ Cup and the Florida Derby.
โ
Yet, according to a report by the New York Times, the colt failed a post-race drug test after his victory in the Group 1 Hopeful Stakes at Saratoga last September and has continued to race since.
โ
It is the latest revelation to emerge from a controversial Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs where seven horses died during the lead-up.
Saffie Joseph Jr, who trained two of the fatalities, was suspended from the track indefinitely and his Kentucky Derby runner Lord Miles withdrawn from the race.
โ
Forte reportedly tested positive for a substance used to relieve pain and reduce inflammation but the case has not been heard due to repeated delays.
โThis matter likely would have been adjudicated months ago but for the repeated procedural delays sought by the trainerโs counsel,โ a spokesperson for the New York State Gaming Commission told the New York Times.
Forte is owned by Mike Repole, who made his fortune in the drinks industry selling his company to Coca Cola, and Vincent Viola, who is the owner of Florida Panthers ice hockey team.
The Kentucky Derby was won by Mage, who had twice been beaten by Forte in the Florida Derby and Fountain Of Youth Stakes at Gulfstream Park.
