Liverpool news: New Mohamed Salah replacement emerges as Saudi transfer interest lingers - The Mirror

Liverpool rejected a £150million bid from Al-Ittihad during the summer transfer window - but the Saudi Pro League champions are expected to launch another bid in January

Liverpool are expected to get back to winning ways on Saturday when Everton travel across Stanley Park for the Merseyside derby.

The Reds have made a good start to the season, despite dropping points against Tottenham and Brighton. They are just three points off the top of the Premier League table, while Sean Dyche's Toffees are hovering just above the relegation zone in 16th.

Everton's only Premier League win at Anfield this millennium came in February 2021 when Carlo Ancelotti's side recorded a 2-0 triumph, with fans not in attendance due to Covid rules. The last meeting between the two clubs also finished 2-0, but to Liverpool.

Osimhen interest

Liverpool will try to sign prolific Napoli striker Victor Osimhen next summer - but only if Mohamed Salah leaves. Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad saw a £150million bid for Salah rejected in August and are expected to make another bid in January or next summer.

"Mo is welcome at any time," said Saudi Pro League executive Michael Emenalo last month. "But no one is pressured or forced to come. If anyone would like to come and there is an opportunity to work with the releasing club in a very respectful and professional manner, we would be very happy to have them. But yeah, Mo is my personal favourite."

Sancho transfer?

Do you think Liverpool should swoop for Victor Osimhen or Jadon Sancho? Let us know in the comments below!

Could Jadon Sancho complete a sensational move to Liverpool? The Reds were linked with the England international, who is set to leave Manchester United in January after falling out with Erik ten Hag, before his £73m move to Old Trafford two years ago.

Liverpool were urged to sign Sancho from Borussia Dortmund before that transfer. Former Reds star Fabio Borini admitted in April 2021: "Jadon Sancho would be a great signing and it would be fun to steal him from Manchester United."

Tonali support

Former Liverpool defender Steven Caulker has offered his support to Newcastle midfielder Sandro Tonali, who could receive a lengthy ban amid a betting probe. Tonali's agent has admitted the Italy international is struggling with a gambling problem.

"I think that this situation is another, I want to say reality check of the issues that footballers as individuals are facing and football clubs collectively are facing because it's only growing," Caulker told Sky Sports News.

"I've been in the game 15 years now, we've always played it on the back of buses on the way to away games. But it's becoming more and more high-profile, bigger stakes are being placed and unfortunately bans are then being handed out.

"I think it's really, really tough on the individual because we're in an industry where we're surrounded by betting, it's everywhere. While you're on the pitch you've got 32Red and Bet365 running alongside the pitch and it's hard to escape and I really feel for Tonali."
