Jadon Sancho has evoked Michael Jordan after swapping his miserable existence at Manchester United for a return to Borussia Dortmund.

Sancho has moved back to Dortmund on loan until the end of the season, ending a spell of isolation at United, where he had been ostracised by Erik ten Hag. The 23-year-old winger has not played since August 26 following a falling out with Ten Hag, who he then refused to apologise to.

He has landed back at his former club, who sold him to United for Β£73million in the summer of 2021. Dortmund are paying a loan fee of around Β£3m for his services, but United are footing the bill for Β£100,000 of his Β£250,000-a-week salary.

Sancho, who will wear the No10 shirt, is clearly delighted to be back in Germany - and Dortmund released a statement which referenced Chicago Bulls legend Jordan on social media.

The statement read: β€œFor immediate release Contact: @Black Yellow DORTMUND, DE. (January 11, 2024) - The following statement was released today by Jadon Sancho, in response to questions about his future career plans: β€˜I'm back.’”

β€œWhen I came into the dressing room today, it felt like 'coming home',” Sancho said. β€œI know the club inside and out, I've always been very close with the fans here, and I've never lost contact with those in charge. β€œI can’t wait to see my teammates again, go out on the pitch, play football with a smile on my face, prepare goals, score goals and help qualify for the Champions League.”

β€œJadon is an absolute difference player and I’m looking forward to seeing him back in black and yellow soon,” sporting director Sebastian Kehl said. β€œHe knows this city, Signal Iduna Park, our fans and our club. Even though he hasn't played any competitive games in the past few months, we are sure that he will quickly settle back in with us, get into top form and use his qualities to help us achieve our goals for the season.”

Sancho played for Dortmund between 2017 and 2021, returning 50 goals and 64 assists in 137 games for the club and helping them to win the DFB Pokal. He will be hoping to refind such form, having struggled since joining United two and a half years ago.

β€Œ

He has just 12 goals and six assists in 82 appearances for Ten Hag's side and has failed to live up to his billing. Sancho has made just three appearances in the 2023/24 season so far, the last of which came in United's 3-2 win over Nottingham Forest on August 26.

Ten Hag banished him from the first team set-up in September following an argument about his level in training sessions. Sancho refused to apologise and after refusing a move to Saudi Arabia, he has found a move that suits him.
