Manchester United's decision to sack Ruben Amorim will have ripple effects around Old Trafford, and his departure could prompt Bruno Fernandes to reassess his future

Bruno Fernandes' future at Manchester United has been thrust back into the spotlight after the sacking of Ruben Amorim. Fernandes, 31, was in talks to leave Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, forcing Amorim to intervene.
The United captain received a lucrative offer from Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, who were ready to pay the Red Devils a staggering £100million to prise him away. Al-Hilal also offered Fernandes an eye-watering contract worth £200m.
But after numerous conversations with Amorim, the Portuguese stayed put. "[He] was very annoying to me not to go," Fernandes explained in June. "The club said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave."
Fernandes' good relationship with his now former manager is no secret. On Tuesday, the day after Amorim's sacking was announced, the midfielder was spotted leaving a Cheshire coffee shop with Carlos Fernandes, Amorim's right-hand man who has also been dismissed by United.
In a new revelation last month, Fernandes revealed how he felt 'hurt' after realising that United 'wanted him to leave'. "From the club I felt it was, 'If you go it's not so bad for us'," ex-Sporting Lisbon star told Canal 11.

More than hurting me, it makes me sad. I'm a player that no one can criticise, I'm always available, I always give my best. I could have left in this transfer window, I would have earned much more money.
"I would have won many trophies this season, but I decided not to go, not only for family reasons but because I genuinely love the club."
Fernandes added: "The club wanted me to leave. I told the directors that, I think they didn't have the courage to make that decision because the manager wanted me. But if I said I wanted to leave, even with the manager wanting me to stay, the club would let me."

With Amorim out of the equation, Al-Hilal could try their luck in January. More likely, though, is a move in the summer, just as Fernandes hinted at in October. "As I've always said, I feel good here. I want to achieve my dreams still," the 31-year-old said.
"I can't talk for the club. I've seen a lot of people talking that I had an agreement to go already next season. If the club has done that agreement, it wasn't made with me.
"I haven't spoken with anyone. My agent also knows how I work. If he wants to talk to me, it will be after the World Cup. Until then, I won't speak to anyone."
One man who likely won't want United to sell Fernandes is Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, who brought him to Old Trafford in January 2020 in a deal worth up to £67.7m. Solskjaer is a leading candidate to replace Amorim on an interim basis, and if he's selected, he'll attempt to get the job permanently and could have a say in their transfer business.
