First-half goals from Stephen Dawson and Scott McGleish put the Os in control before Scott Wootton got Rovers back in the game.

Slade’s side were then indebted to goalkeeper Jason Brown for ensuring they returned to London with all three points.

β€œIt was a great win. I am really proud of the lads. They dug so deep,” said Slade. β€œWe were in control until they scored and then we certainly had to hang on a bit.

β€œThere is a tremendous spirit and resilience within the club. We were out on our feet in the last 10 minutes, but we hung on to get our reward.

β€œOur keeper made four excellent saves but good keepers do that at crucial times.”

Rovers boss Les Parry felt his side were unlucky to lose, saying: β€œTheir keeper was inspirational. It was just not our day. But we did not take our chances – that is the bottom line. We did not deserve to lose.”
