Wrexham star explains how injury hell inspired stunning heroics vs Coventry City - The Mirror

Kieffer Moore scored a perfect hat-trick as Wrexham came from behind to beat Championship leaders Coventry City 3-2 on Friday night, with the striker in unstoppable form

Wrexham's Kieffer Moore has confessed that a good night's kip was all he really craved after netting a "perfect" hat-trick. The Welsh international scored three times in just 23 minutes of the second half, helping the Red Dragons overturn a deficit to beat Championship leaders Coventry City 3-2 on Friday evening.

The result brought Frank Lampard's team's unbeaten start this season to a halt as Moore first scored with his right foot, then his head, and finally a superb left-footed strike. The 33-year-old striker, who made the switch to Wrexham from Sheffield United for £2million in the summer, took home the match ball and was also crowned player of the match.

However, when quizzed about his celebration plans during his post-match press conference, Moore revealed that a decent snooze was pretty much all he was aiming for, given the challenges of being a dad.

As per The Athletic, he said: "I might have a nice glass of red wine tonight. We have a one-year-old (son Hudson), so getting some sleep can be tough. Maybe I'll also ask my wife if I can have a nice night's sleep. Though it'll probably be a swift 'no'."

Moore has quickly found his stride in North Wales, having already scored nine goals in 15 appearances across all competitions this season. That is a stark contrast to his tally of just six goals in 30 appearances for Sheffield United last season.

The campaign ended in heartbreak for his former club after they were defeated by Sunderland in the Championship play-off final, with boss Chris Wilder dismissed a few weeks later. Moore admitted it proved a challenging period for him too, with injuries disrupting his form.

He said: "It was a difficult season. I started well, but then it got to January and I struggled with multiple injuries and had to have surgery. Coming back from that wasn't great, but I got myself back in a position where I was showing a good portion of myself.

"Would I have liked the season to turn out better? Of course. But I use things like that as motivation. I wanted to come here and almost remind people what kind of player I am. I know I can perform at high levels and tonight was one of them."

Moore's showing on Friday night drew widespread praise afterwards, including from Coventry manager Frank Lampard, who labelled him a "very good striker". Ex-Wales international Nathan Blake also weighed in, calling Moore's performance "frightening".

Speaking on the BBC's Feast of Football phone-in, Blake said: "He has adapted and he was frightening last night. He physically manhandled them. They were trying to rough him up and I love him because he never loses his rag. You never see him snarling or anything like that. With the physicality last night, they just couldn't handle him."

Following Saturday's results, Wrexham now find themselves in 15th place in the Championship table, level on points with Leicester, Swansea and Derby. The victory against Coventry has given Phil Parkinson's team an eight-point cushion above the relegation zone and they are just five points shy of the play-offs.

Wrexham have a lengthy journey to Portsmouth for their next league match on Wednesday evening, before welcoming Charlton Athletic to the Racecourse Ground on Saturday afternoon.
