The Owls hosted their Championship rivals at Hillsborough on Wednesday running out 4-2 winners. Windass, the son of legendary former Hull man Dean, had been in scintillating form before the game.

He had scored in his last four league games. And he took centre-stage once again against Derby. Picking up the ball just outside of the centre-circle in his own half, he attempted an audacious effort.

The ball flew over Rams goalkeeper Jacob ZetterstrΓΆm and into the back of the net, sending the home fans into raptures. A commentator describing the goal said: "Here's Windass. He's going for goal you know. He's going for goal you know! Oh my word! That is unbelievable! Josh Windass!"

Watching the strike, the Sky Sports studio were left nearly silent. Paul Merson said in response: "Wow, that's amazing." Host Julian Warren then did his best to describe the strike.

He said: "It's absolutely extraordinary. Better than Beckham? It's up there. Unreal says Paul Merson. Better than Beckham says Clinton Morrison. That was special. Josh Windass putting Sheffield Wednesday 2-0 up."

Merson then followed that verdict up by suggested the the goal was "ridiculous." It wasn't just in the studio that Windass was receiving praise.

Fans also took to Twitter to hail the forward. One said: "One of the best goals you’ll ever see from Josh Windass. The vision, the execution. Was ten yards inside his own half. Incredible goal."

It was part of a memorable afternoon for Sheffield Wednesday, club legend Barry Bannan had given them the lead against Derby before Windass' wonderstrike made it 2-0.

Djeidi Gassama extended the lead before Jerry Yates pulled a goal back. But the hosts were not to be denied as Anthony Musaba netted late on, before Ebou Adams scored in stoppage time for Derby.
