West Ham captain and topscorer Jarrod Bowen appears set to be restricted to the sidelines for the foreseeable future after picking up an injury in the Hammers’ 5-0 defeat to Liverpool at the London Stadium

West Ham star Jarrod Bowen is facing weeks on the sidelines after breaking his foot against Liverpool.

The England star started in the Hammers’ 5-0 defeat against the Merseysiders at the weekend. But he picked up an injury after a heavy challenge from Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Bowen attempted to continue but lasted for just an hour before being replaced by summer signing Crysencio Summerville. And West Ham will now be without their top scorer for the foreseeable future.

A statement from the Hammers on Tuesday read: “West Ham United can confirm Jarrod Bowen sustained a fractured foot injury in Sunday’s Premier League fixture against Liverpool. The injury to his left foot, picked up in the first half at London Stadium, will sideline the Hammers captain heading into the New Year.”

Bowen, 28, has been the star of the season for West Ham so far this season. Despite his side’s struggles, he has still managed to score six goals and provide four assists in all competitions.

Under-fire West Ham boss Julen Lopetegui admitted that he was unsure of how long Bowen would be out for in the immediate aftermath of the defeat to Liverpool. He said: “I do not know exactly. We will have to assess him and we will know in the coming days.”

Bowen joins Lukasz Fabianski on the sidelines. But there has been more positive news over recent days. Midfield pair Tomas Soucek and Guido Rodriguez can return after being suspended against Liverpool. Meanwhile, there has been a positive update over forward Michail Antonio following his car crash.

West Ham’s fixture calendar is not set to get any easier over the coming weeks. The Hammers, who are 13th and eight points clear of the drop zone, take on reigning champions Manchester City before an FA Cup clash with Aston Villa.
