Erik ten Hag and Jose Mourinho in agreement as Ruben Amorim makes Marcus Rashford decision - The Mirror

Ruben Amorim suggested he would rather give a spot on the Manchester United bench to his 63-year-old goalkeeping coach than Marcus Rashford, echoing the complaints of his predecessors

Ruben Amorim has all but confirmed Marcus Rashford has no future at Manchester United due to issues bemoaned by both Jose Mourinho and Erik ten Hag.

Rashford has fallen out of favour under the new manager, who only arrived at Old Trafford from Sporting CP in November as Ten Hag's successor. The 27-year-old, who still has three years left on his current contract, has featured 15 times for the Red Devils this season, last appearing in a 2-1 Europa League victory against Viktoria Plzen back in mid-December.

And speaking after United's 1-0 win over Fulham on Sunday (January 26), Amorim claimed that Rashford wasn't giving "maximum effort" to find his way back into the fold. When asked why he was unavailable for the fixture, the United boss said: "It's always the same reason - the training, the way I see a footballer should do in life. It's every day, every detail.

"If things don't change, I will not change. It's the same situation for every player, if you do the maximum and right things we can use every player. You can see on the bench we miss a bit of pace on the bench, but I would put [Jorge] Vital before a player who doesn't give the maximum every day."

Vital is Amorim's 63-year-old goalkeeping coach who had previously worked with him at SC Braga and Sporting CP before making his way to Old Trafford alongside the Portuguese coach. And Amorim isn't alone in his opinion of Rashford either, with predecessors Ten Hag and Mourinho previously picking problems with the forward's dedication to his trade.

Mourinho famously questioned Rashford's maturity levels after his tenure with the Red Devils came to a close. Speaking with Hristo Stoichkov after his departure in 2018, the 62-year-old said: "I think kids these days have a different social life than us, and players have around them an entourage, and I mean a personal entourage, the people that surround them, that protect them more, give them more affection, more excuses.

"They reach maturity more slowly. When we talk about Luke Shaw, [Anthony] Martial, [Jesse] Lingard, [Marcus] Rashford, we're talking about kids with great potential but still lack a word I can't say but that you like a lot... they lack a bit of that. Character, personality, as they say in Spain as well, bad blood, that natural aggression that you had."

Earlier this season, Ten Hag blamed Rashford's lifestyle choices for poor performances on the pitch following their eighth-placed finish in the Premier League last year. He explained: "I think he always knew. Every player knows, when your lifestyle is not right you can't perform in the league we have to perform in.

"You don't get the right levels if you don't have a good and disciplined life away from Carrington. He needed some help, by backing him, for instance. But he has to do it himself, at the end of the day. He has to set his life right, his training attitude right, he has to set his match attitude right.

"When he sets his professionalism he will perform because he's a class player." Rashford finds himself in a sad state of affairs in 2025, looking likely to receive no further game time at United under Amorim. The forward has played 426 games for his boyhood club, scoring 138 goals and providing 63 assists across all competitions.

With the winter transfer window set to close next Monday (February 3), Rashford has little time left to secure a loan move or a permanent deal elsewhere. While the likes of Barcelona and Borussia Dortmund have been linked with the outcast, nothing has materialised as of yet.
