Rio Ferdinand's son, Lorenz, has made his first move into senior football and joined Havant & Waterlooville on a work experience deal until the end of the season from Brighton

Lorenz Ferdinand, the son of Manchester United and England legend Rio Ferdinand, has joined seventh-tier side Havant & Waterlooville on work experience. The 18-year-old joins the team from Brighton and Hove Albion for the remainder of the season.

Ferdinand Jr is the eldest of Rio's five children, and has played for the Seagulls' under-21 side once this season, and remained on the bench six other times. After being an under-18s regular last term, the move will see the teenager's first foray into senior football after The Hawks' first choice goalkeeper Ben Dudzinski was been ruled out for the 'foreseeable future' with injury.

The England international's son is in the third year of his scholarship with Brighton, with work experience allowing another club to take on the responsibility for the footballing element of his agreement. Ferdinand Jr previously moved out of the family home in Kent and into digs as he looked to progress in football with the Sussex side.

His new club certainly appear eager to have a new prospect on their hands. The Southern League Premier Division South side sit three points behind Dorchester Town and a play-off position.

A club statement said: "Havant and Waterlooville Football Club are thrilled to announce that, goalkeeper, Lorenz Ferdinand has joined on work experience from Premier League outfit Brighton & Hove Albion for the remainder of the season.

"Ferdinand, 18, came through the set-up at Brighton & Hove Albion where he now continues to refine his trade in their Under-21's set-up.

"Lorenz links up with Shaun North's side for the run-in as the push towards the end of the season continues! We welcome Lorenz to the Hawks and look forward to seeing him in action very soon."

The new Havant and Waterlooville ace is excited to be in a new environment to continue his learning. Ferdinand Jr has already been embraced by his new team-mates and surroundings.

Speaking following the announcement of his move, the youngster said: "It's been really good. Everyone has made me feel really welcome.

"It's a great club from what I've seen so far. It's good to be in and around the boys."

In 2023 Lorenz signed a deal with agency New Era Global Sports, which prompted his father to reflect on his journey. "Our eldest is on his own journey in football," Ferdinand Snr. posted on Instagram.
