Man Utd wage bill revealed as Patrick Dorgu among lowest earners behind third-choice keeper - The Mirror

Manchester United hope they have solved their left-sided issues with the addition of Patrick Dorgu, but the young Denmark international is among the club's lower earners

Patrick Dorgu can expect plenty of game time at Manchester United after joining from Lecce, but it appears he won't be receiving wages to match.

Dorgu arrived from the Italian side in the final days of the transfer window, with the Danish international setting them back a reported £29.2million. He was one of two players brought to Old Trafford late in the window, with teenage centre-back Ayden Heaven completing a move from Arsenal.

Head coach Ruben Amorim will now hope he has a solution to the left-sided problem, allowing him to implement his 3-4-3 system with more success. Right-back Diogo Dalot had often filled in down the left during the Portuguese coach's time in charge, with mixed results.

The winter transfer window saw United trim some money from their wage budget, with Antony and Marcus Rashford both leaving on loan, though their parent club continues to cover some of their pay packet. However, Dorgu's £40,000-per-week wages put him far down the pecking order.

That £40,000 figure comes from The Athletic, who note that the sum is substantially less than United would have likely had to pay other more established targets. United explored a move for Alphonso Davies, who is out of contract in the summer, but the Canadian is expected to stay at Bayern Munich thanks to the promise of a new big-money deal.

According to The Mail, that means Dorgu is on a lower wage than third-choice goalkeeper Tom Heaton. The three-cap England international arrived as a back-up in 2021, but hasn't played a minute for the first-team since starting the Carabao Cup semi-final second leg in February 2023.

Indeed, there's also every chance United pay more per week for Rashford than for Dorgu, despite the former spending the remainder of the season with Aston Villa. A minimum of 75 percent of the forward's £325,000-per-week wages will be picked up by Villa, and - while performance-related bonuses could see that go up - that base figure would leave his parent club responsible for more than £80,000.

“Patrick is a really exciting talent; his strong defensive and attacking attributes, adaptability and work-rate will make him a key part of Ruben Amorim’s squad," United technical director Jason Wilcox said of Dorgu. “Patrick has had a superb start to his career, and at the age of just 20, we know he will continue to develop under the guidance of our excellent coaching team.

“Patrick is the latest exciting young player that we have bought into the club. We believe that each of these talents has world-class potential and the ability to play a key role in achieving the success that everyone at Manchester United is striving for.”

The Danish defender could be in line for his debut this coming weekend when Manchester United take on Leicester City in the FA Cup. His earliest opportunity for Premier League action won't come until February 16, with Amorim's team taking on Tottenham Hotspur in North London.
