Mason Greenwood is reportedly 'obsessed' with representing England again, despite Steve McLaren holding out hope he will switch allegiance to Jamaica. The former Manchester United forward is currently thriving in Ligue 1 with Marseille.

Having made the switch from the Red Devils last summer, the 24-year-old has 31 goals and 10 assists from 51 outings. This season alone, he has also found the back of the net eight times from 11 outings, while setting up a further three.

And given how he has found his footing on French soil as of late, it is suggested that the Bradford-born striker is infatuated with the idea of playing for the Three Lions again - with his only cap for the nation coming in the form of a slender win over Iceland in 2020. As per the Daily Mail, Greenwood is 'obsessed' with the idea of returning to international football with England.

That's despite McLaren claiming that he was set to join Jamaica for a recent training camp, as the nation looks to qualify for the 2026 World Cup in North America. Speaking about Greenwood, the 64-year-old said in September: "We acquired a passport and we expected him to be coming to this camp.

"But in a conversation with his family, he's not going to commit at this time to anybody. He's taking his time over that, so it's a little bit disappointing.

"We probably have to be more patient, but we will keep the contact, we will keep pursuing him because I know from my conversations with Mason and his family that he loves Jamaica, respects Jamaica.

"He wants to concentrate on club football and not commit to an international team at the present moment. We have to respect that however much we've worked hard to get him here for these camps. So, who knows in the future."

It was thought earlier this year that Greenwood was set to switch nationality to play for Jamaica, with speculation now brewing that he is instead holding out hope to represent England once more. However, Thomas Tuchel confirmed in September that the player isn't in his thoughts.

At the time, the head coach said: "I have not spoken to him until now. I have not spoken to him or his camp. My understanding was that he tries to play for Jamaica so we didn't give it another thought. He was not in the mix at the moment and he is not in our thoughts for our team."

It comes after Greenwood was frozen out of the Manchester United squad in 2022 as he faced allegations of attempted rape, assault and controlling and coercive behaviour. However, the charges were dropped by the Crown Prosecution Service the following year.

In the years since, Greenwood has attempted to rebuild his career on foreign soil, impressing with a loan spell with Getafe in 2023, before securing a permanent £26.6million move from United to Marseille last summer.

While England have qualified for the 2026 World Cup in North America, and Jamaica are closing in on stamping their own ticket under McLaren, Greenwood has instead been enjoying the break without international football. Marseille next face Nice come Friday, November 21.
