Alan Shearer has suggested that four Manchester United players have “really bad attitudes” in the aftermath of their humiliating defeat by Newcastle.

The Red Devils slumped to a 1-0 defeat at St James’ Park on Saturday evening, with Anthony Gordon scoring the winning goal for the home side. The loss signalled United’s sixth Premier League defeat of the season already, leaving them seventh and five points adrift of the top four.

After watching the game, Shearer was not left impressed with the Red Devils’ approach to the clash and slammed Erik ten Hag ’s men. Speaking on the Rest is Football podcast, the former Newcastle striker said: “I thought they were a mess, I thought they were terrible. I thought their attitude was awful and it highlighted some of the really bad attitudes they clearly have.

“When it's tough and when it's hard, you see the players who want to play for you and you see the players who want to support you as a manager and as a fan. And I thought there were three or four players who were not prepared to roll their sleeves up and gave up far too easily and didn't want to fight.”

Shearer’s assessment was not the first time that he has questioned United’s dressing room. Speaking on Match of the Day, he claimed that the side don’t have the character to respond when the going gets tough.

He added: "For me, there are too many bad eggs in that Man United team. Too many bad attitudes. It's alright when things are going well for you, you can get your feet on the ball, play and pick your head up when things are nice and rosy.

"When it's not going for you, when you're a bit tired and you've got to roll your sleeves up, there's not enough characters in that team."

United will be aiming to respond to their defeat against Newcastle in midweek as they take on Chelsea at Old Trafford. Another defeat could potentially see the Red Devils fall to ninth in the Premier League table.

Anthony Martial may have to patch things over with his manager after a furious exchange between the two come full-time. Speaking about the incident, Ten Hag said: "It’s not about Anthony Martial, it’s about the team.

"I try to energise the team and try to get a reaction from the team in this moment. As you see, we had a tough period and when you’re coaching you are a little more aggressive, so that’s normal."
