Manchester United will confirm Michael Carrick as their interim head coach shortly after striking a deal for their former midfielder to step in following Ruben Amorim's exit

Michael Carrick is set to be announced as Manchester United's interim head coach until the end of the season. An agreement in principle has been reached to appoint Carrick and his coaching team, with all parties now working to finalise a deal.

Confirmation of Carrick's arrival could potentially arrive later on Tuesday, with the 44-year-old's first match at the helm likely to be Saturday's Manchester derby. Carrick and his staff are expected to conduct their first training session on Wednesday, with the first-team squad having Tuesday off.

Carrick emerged as the top choice to steady the ship following face-to-face talks with chief executive Omar Berrada and director of football Jason Wilcox. Carrick met with the duo last Thursday, while Ole Gunnar Solskjaer had a conversation with them on Saturday.

Impressed by Carrick's vision during these talks, Berrada and Carrick held further discussions on Monday with the aim of finalising a deal with the former Manchester United midfielder.

This included deliberations over the composition of the ex-Middlesbrough manager's backroom staff, especially given United's shortage of senior coaches following the exit of Ruben Amorim and his Portuguese coaching team, reports the Manchester Evening News.

Jonathan Woodgate, Carrick's former Middlesbrough coach, is likely to join his coaching team, as will former Manchester United defender Jonny Evans and Travis Binnion. Per BBC Sport, former England No 2, Steve Holland, will be Carrick's assistant head coach.

Darren Fletcher, who has overseen United's last two games, will return to his role with the Under-18s with Carrick now all but in place.

Carrick stepped in as United's manager for three matches following Solskjaer's sacking in November 2021 after forming part of the Norwegian's coaching team. He guided United to wins against Villarreal and Arsenal and a draw with Chelsea at Stamford Bridge before departing himself for pastures new ahead of Ralf Rangnick's arrival.

Carrick went on to become a No 1 in his own right in the Championship at Middlesbrough, leading them to the play-offs in the 2022-23 season.

He spent two-and-a-half years at the helm on Teesside before being sacked back in June 2025 after they failed to reach the Championship play-offs, finishing in 10th place.
