Managing Man Utd as Michael Carrick makes Bruno Fernandes' future clear and key issue resolved - The Mirror

Michael Carrick is set to become Manchester United interim boss after agreeing a deal in principle to return to Old Trafford

Michael Carrick is set to tackle several urgent matters as Manchester United's interim manager. The club legend has agreed in principle to take over for the rest of the season, with his contract currently being finalised.

The 44-year-old, who could be at the helm for the Manchester derby on Saturday, was formerly part of United's coaching team under Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He also had a brief three-match stint as caretaker boss in 2021, securing victories against Arsenal and Villarreal and a draw with Chelsea, prior to Ralf Rangnick's arrival.

After departing Old Trafford, Carrick took up the role of Middlesbrough manager in October 2022, a position he held until the end of last season. It has been reported that his plans for the remainder of the campaign have impressed the United hierarchy but he faces some pivotal decisions during his tenure.

Kobbie Mainoo's opportunity

Kobbie Mainoo has had a challenging season so far. The United academy graduate wasn't the first choice under Ruben Amorim, having only started once this season in the Carabao Cup before the Portuguese coach was sacked.

With a new manager stepping in, the 20-year-old will have a fresh start following constant speculation about his future. Promisingly for the United hopeful, his past performances have already earned Carrick's approval, with the former Boro boss speaking highly of the England international during the summer.

Discussing Mainoo, Carrick said: "I think for a club to have a player that has come through the academy, knows the club and feels it - that's massive. To have a talent like that, as he's already shown, you've got to say: 'Right, he gets it, he knows it - let's help him, build on him, and stick with him. I think there's definitely a place for him."

These comments suggest Mainoo could be in line for more first team action under Carrick compared to what he might have experienced under Amorim, which would be welcome news for United supporters.

Bruno Fernandes' future

Having previously worked alongside Bruno Fernandes during his time on Solskjaer's coaching staff, Carrick is well-versed in the United captain's abilities. Over 310 appearances for the club, he has netted 103 goals and registered 95 assists, often dragging his side over the line through his individual brilliance.

Yet, United nearly faced losing him after Saudi Pro League outfit Al-Hilal tabled a £100million offer for the Portuguese playmaker. While the bid was turned down, Fernandes recently admitted feeling wounded by suggestions that the club were content to let him leave.

One of Carrick's primary objectives will be reassuring Fernandes that his long-term future remains at Old Trafford. Although he may only be a temporary appointment, the caretaker manager can demonstrate the club are moving in the right direction through encouraging performances during his brief tenure.

Transfer dilemma

While Mainoo could be poised for more action, United's midfield still requires attention. Amorim had previously expressed a need for reinforcements and his preferred duo of Casemiro and Fernandes arguably didn't bring out the best in the club captain.

United are reportedly planning to spend money in this month's transfer window, with ex-Wolves star Ruben Neves being identified as a potential target, according to The Guardian. The Al-Hilal midfielder claimed to be valued at £20m, with Neves being one of several players linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Carrick typically favoured a 4-2-3-1 formation during his time at Middlesbrough, which should allow Fernandes to slot into his preferred attacking role. This would leave Casemiro, Mainoo, Manuel Ugarte and Mason Mount as senior midfield options, while young talent Jack Fletcher has also been promoted recently.

Whether Carrick secures a new signing or turns to the club's youth system, finding the right midfield balance will be crucial in United's quest for a Champions League spot. It was a problem his predecessor Amorim failed to resolve, but given Carrick's successful playing career as a defensive midfielder, Carrick should be well-equipped to identify the perfect solution.
