Manchester United have confirmed that the club's wage bill has fallen by 11 per cent in their new quarterly financial figures.

The club's attempts to cut costs across all areas of the business under Ineos chief Sir Jim Ratcliffe have been well documented since the British billionaire acquired a stake in the Red Devils last year.

β€Œ

United have managed to offload a number of high-profile players during Ratcliffe's tenure, including the likes of Mason Greenwood, Anthony Martial and Raphael Varane. And those departures - amongst others - have helped the club significantly reduce their salary bill.

The club revealed that employee benefit expenses for the three months ending September 30 totalled Β£80.2 million: a decrease of 11.2 per cent (Β£10.1m) on the amount recorded for the same period last year.

United acknowledged the decrease and "primarily" attributed it to "changes in the make-up of the first team playing squad".

The fact that United failed to qualify for this year's Champions League will also have played a part in the lower wage bill. The Red Devils finished eighth last season under Erik ten Hag, who was sacked by the club's powerbrokers last month.

The other big talking points from United's financial results was the cost of Ineos' restructuring of the club. A redundancy scheme which saw 250 jobs cut cost United some Β£8.6m.

United's chief executieve, Omar Berrada, outlined that the club were targeting a return to the top of European football under new head coach Ruben Amorim, who oversaw his first match at the weekend.

He said: β€œThe season is now well under way for both our men’s and women’s team, and we are keen to ensure both are as competitive as possible. We are delighted to have appointed Ruben Amorim as head coach of our men’s team and remain committed to returning Manchester United to the top of domestic and European football.

β€œOur cost and headcount reductions remain on track. Our renovation of the Carrington training centre is progressing well, while the Old Trafford regeneration task force continues its work. Once it has delivered its recommendations, we will then take some time to digest them and evaluate all our options in the upcoming year.”
