Liverpool star rubbishes Premier League title theory - 'Nobody would be saying that' - The Mirror

Liverpool star Dominik Szoboszlai has rubbished the idea that they can't overhaul a seven point gap to leaders Arsenal - insisting no one would declare them champions if the roles were reversed

Dominik Szoboszlai has refused to see Arsenal's lead at the top of the Premier League as beyond Liverpool with the Hungarian claiming "nobody would be saying that we had won the league" if they were clear by seven points.

The Gunners have been able to seize on Liverpool's poor recent form to establish themselves as the title favourites. They've won five on the bounce to establish as six point lead over Manchester City in second whilst they're a point further clear of the Reds in third.

Liverpool had been relentless to start the season, winning five on the bounce, but then lost four in succession to leave them with an uphill battle as they bid to catch Arsenal.

Szoboszlai became a Premier League winner at Anfield last season and Arne Slot was bidding to lead Liverpool's first back-to-back league triumphs for more than three decades. Now they'll be relying on a slip from those above them but their Hungarian is not seeing the gap as irretrievable.

He said: "The most important thing is to keep going like this. There is a long way to go. Now it's all about the Premier League and facing Man City at the weekend. We know how good they are now. We have to focus on that.

"The season is long. If we were seven points clear at this stage nobody would be saying that we had won the league already. Last season when we were leading the way, we just stayed calm and kept on going because anything can happen. We just need to focus on ourselves, win our games and then let's see what other teams are doing."

Liverpool head to the blue half of Manchester this weekend, where defeat could leave them 10 points off the pace after 11 games and all but out of the title race. The Reds recently snapped their losing streak with a win over Aston Villa last weekend.

They enjoyed a rare win at the Etihad last season but it has largely been an unhappy hunting ground. Nevertheless Szoboszlai has hailed the team for sticking by each other in spite of their recent run of results, which saw individuals singled out for criticism.

He said: "I think the team spirit. We are a really close team. Everyone protects each other, we are there for each other. That's been the most important thing. When everything works, everyone is happy and it's all positive, it's easy to stick together.

"The hardest thing is when you find yourself in a position where we were a few weeks ago. But even then we stuck together and kept on going, believing it would turn for us."
