Liverpool suffered their first defeat of the season after Eddie Nketiah struck deep into stoppage time to secure Crystal Palace a 2-1 victory. Ismaila Sarr gave Palace the lead from a corner in the ninth minute as the home side were rewarded for a strong start to the game.
Federico Chiesa’s volley with just three minutes of normal time remaining looked to have rescued Arne Slot’s side a point. However, Nketiah’s goal nine minutes into stoppage time secured his side all three points.
The Reds remain top of the table, but Arsenal can cut their lead to two points with a win over Newcastle United on Sunday afternoon. And below is how Ian Doyle rated Liverpool’s players at Selhurst Park.
Alisson Becker 8
No chance with opener and fine saves from Munoz, Pino and Mateta kept Liverpool in game before interval. Watching brief second half as visitors dominated until the late winner.
Conor Bradley 5
Bit unlucky to concede corner for opener but had major problems dealing with Pino and Mitchell down the Palace left. Showed a bit more going forward towards half-time. Subbed.
Ibrahima Konate 4
Gifted two big chances to Palace first half and massively out of sorts, but close with header from corner. Booked and subbed.
Virgil van Dijk 6
Not his usual composed self when snatching at a couple of clearances. Kept decent line second half as Liverpool pressed high.
Milos Kerkez 5
With no winger ahead of him first half, attempted to provide some attacking thrust down the left with minimal impact. More joy second half with Gakpo in front of him.
Ryan Gravenberch 6
Got his header all wrong when inadvertently assisting Palace opener but flashes in midfield and saw shot turned against post first half. Helped Liverpool increase pressure after break.
Alexis Mac Allister 5
Tried to find a way through the massed Palace midfield but too often consumed by opponents. Good pass released Isak second half. Subbed.
Dominik Szoboszlai 7
The one outfield Liverpool player to show any sort of fire and quality before the interval and assisted chance for Konate before switching to right-back second half and good cross for Wirtz.
Mohamed Salah 4
Struggled with the basics and offered Liverpool next to nothing going forward before interval and no defensive cover. Mild improvement after that but still very disappointing.
Alexander Isak 4
Looked very much a player starting a first Premier League game with players he hadn’t trained with for long. Missed decent second-half opening. Subbed.
Florian Wirtz 6
Operating in a free role, worked hard to find space but lacked quality in possession. Much better second half when in the number 10 position and forced Henderson into save. Subbed.
SUBS
Cody Gakpo (for Bradley 46) 6
Offered more structure on the left and ghosted in for some half-chances.
Curtis Jones (for Mac Allister 65) 6
Aided Liverpool with ability to maintain possession and pick a pass.
Jeremie Frimpong (for Konate 74) 6
Added some pace to the Liverpool attack down the right.
Federico Chiesa (for Wirtz 74) 7
Took his goal well and close with another effort.
Rio Ngumoha (for Isak 84)
Not much chance to make a difference.
