Xabi Alonso has emerged as the new favourite to take over from Arne Slot at Liverpool should the Reds decide to sack the Dutch head coach. The 47-year-old is under increased pressure to deliver results, as Liverpool struggles in both the Premier League and the Champions League continue.

It's a stark contrast to last season, when the Reds were dominant on all fronts, winning the Premier League title. However, Liverpool's results have regressed despite an incredible £446m transfer spend this summer, breaking the British transfer record twice.

It's the most ever spent by a Premier League club in a single window, surpassing Chelsea's £434.5m spend in the summer of 2023. Liverpool have lost nine of their last 12 games in all competitions and were hammered by Eredivisie side PSV at Anfield in the Champions League during the week.

The latest disappointing defeat has increased speculation regarding Slot's future at the club, with former Liverpool midfielder Alonso linked with the job. Mirror Football understands no decision on parting ways with Slot is imminent.

It's not the first time the former Spanish international has been linked with the managerial role at Anfield, having been extensively connected during his time as Bayer Leverkusen boss. However, Real Madrid moved quickest to secure Alonso's signature, hiring him to replace Carlo Ancelotti at the Bernabeu in the summer.

After Liverpool's 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest at the weekend, Alonso was 16/1 to replace Slot, according to Oddschecker. Those odds have now tumbled to 5/2 with some bookmakers, with Alonso now replacing Jurgen Klopp as the favourite to take over at Anfield at the time of writing.

Klopp remains in the running, according to the bookmakers, despite playing down a return to management earlier this year. "I said I will never coach a different team in England," he revealed on the Diary of a CEO podcast.

"So that means if it's Liverpool, yeah. So yeah, theoretically it's possible."

When asked if Slot feared losing his job after the defeat to PSV, he said: "No, I am not worried. My focus is on other things than worrying about my own position. I need to do better."

Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner and Bournemouth head coach Andoni Iraola are also among the favourites to take over at Anfield, if Slot were to lose his job. Liverpool travel to West Ham United in the Premier League on Sunday.
