Jose Mourinho looked as though he thought the FIFA Best awards host was from another planet as she subjected him to a bizarre interview about "an inter-planetary cup".

Former Manchester United , Chelsea and Real Madrid boss Mourinho presented the award for FIFA Women’s Coach 2019, which was won by USA boss Jill Ellis.

As Mourinho was walking off stage at the Teatro alla Scala in Milan, host Ilaria D'Amico collared him for an interview - then subjected him to a strange interview about whether he would take charge of a team to face other worlds.

On a night when FIFA's World XI was named, D'Amico went a step further by suggesting the planet's greatest footballers could take part in "an inter-planetary cup".

She asked him who could be a "special coach" for this "special team" - in a reference to Mourinho christening himself "The Special One" after taking charge of Chelsea in 2004.

Mourinho looked baffled by her questions, but played along with an amusing response before making a hasty exit back to his seat.

D'Amico said to Mourinho: "Let's imagine the future. In the very near future, we have discovered life on other planets.

"Of course, before long we would have an inter-planetary cup, a sort of clash of worlds - a competition full of stars.

She added: "Could you imagine who could be the perfect, special coach for a team like this, a special team like this?"

Mourinho joked it would have to be a coach "without a job".

He said: β€œIt has to be a coach without a job. I don't believe FIFA allows coaches to coach two teams at the same time."

Looking around the auditorium, he clocked Fabio Capello and Walter Zenga, and tipped them along with himself to be on the shortlist - to the amusement of his fellow coaches including Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp , winner of the Best FIFA Men's Coach award, who could be seen chuckling away.

"Me, Mr Fabio Capello, Zenga and some others - but I am a candidate," he said - then brought his interviewer back down to earth as he made a sharp exit back to the safety of his seat.
