Jamie Carragher has been criticised by tennis legend Boris Becker in a new spat, just days after a row over the pundit's Africa Cup of Nations comments

The ex-Liverpool defender caused controversy when he appeared to play down the importance of the tournament, and was criticised by Rio Ferdinand before hitting back at his former Premier League rival. Carragher had suggested AFCON was not prestigious enough to benefit any push for the Ballon d'Or by Mohamed Salah.

Now, Carragher has been criticised for comments about Bayern Munich, with three-times Wimbledon champion Becker taking umbridge with his verdict. The ex-Champions League winner suggested he did not rate the team's chances against Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen when they face off in Europe.

The sides meet in the Champions League last-16 next month. Carragher reckons failing to progress in the competition could see Vincent Kompany's position come under scrutiny.

"Bayern have not convinced me at all yet," he said. "Now they are playing against Leverkusen, who dominated Bayern in the Bundesliga recently. It's a 50-50 tie. In the end, I'm predicting Leverkusen [to advance].

"If Kompany does not win, there will be many question marks about his appointment, because the league is expected and the Champions League is the icing on the cake of a season. They have to reach at least the semi-finals."

Becker was unhappy with such an assessment. "There haven’t been any questions regarding the appointment of Kompany!" he posted on X.

"In fact FCBayern just said domestic title most important trophy this year and are happy with the work of Vincent Kompany ! Jamie is NOT well informed at all."

That saw Carragher respond while quoting Becker's criticism. The Sky Sports analyst provided an apology, but one that appeared just a little tongue-in-cheek.

"Apologies @TheBorisBecker it won’t happen again!" he posted, adding a shrug and crying laughter emoji to punctuate his comment.

Ex-Manchester United defender Ferdinand could not help but get stuck into Carragher again. The 46-year-old former England international replied to Becker's initial post.

"Boris… he’s having a bad couple weeks," said Ferdinand. "Let him off".

Carragher had previously slated Ferdinand for offering his view over the defender's comments n AFCON.

"I didn't say that you clown," he said on Instagram. "Stop playing to the gallery like you always do."
