Manchester United star Bruno Fernandes has praised new signing Bryan Mbeumo following the Reds' thrilling 2-1 victory vs Chelsea at Old Trafford. Ruben Amorim, carrying the burden of expectation after a loss to Manchester City in their previous match, was given an early boost when Robert Sanchez of the visiting team was shown a red card for fouling Mbeumo outside his box.
United quickly capitalised on their numerical advantage with Fernandes finding the back of the net, courtesy of Patrick Dorgu's headed assist. When Casemiro doubled the lead shortly before half-time, it seemed like the only question left was how many goals United would score.
However, the tide turned when their Brazil midfielder was dismissed for a second yellow card offence right before the break. As expected, the game became more balanced with both teams down to ten men, but United managed to keep Chelsea at bay until Trevoh Chalobah found the net, setting up a nail-biting finale.
Despite some tense moments during stoppage time, United clung on to secure the win, easing some pressure off their head coach. Mbeumo, who was given a standing ovation when he was substituted, after another impressive performance, took to Instagram to celebrate the victory after the full-time whistle.
The Cameroonian star shared a snap of himself, Casemiro and Fernandes poised over a free kick, captioning it: "Big mentality and big win today! Thanks for the fans again."
United's long-serving captain responded to the post with a succinct three-word appraisal of Mbeumo. "What a player," Fernandes commented, as the positive vibes returned to United's dressing room.
Next on the agenda for Amorim's squad is a journey to Brentford, Mbeumo's former home ground, before they head back to Old Trafford a week later to face Sunderland in their last match prior to the October international break. Ahead of Sunday's contest, United found themselves in 10th place, just two points shy of the Champions League positions.
