Fans of non-league club Woking have clubbed together to raise Β£8,000 to fund an injured player's recovery.

A combination of spectators and former players have donated remarkable amounts on just the first day of the crowdfunding campaign for last season's top goalscorer Scott Rendell.

Rendell is forced to miss the rest of this season after being carried off during the 1-0 defeat to Tranmere Rovers in the Vanarama National League on Saturday, after confirming he has ruptured his anterior cruciate ligament.

Among the donors is an unnamed England international and former player Harry Arter, who now features for Bournemouth in the Premier League.

A bucket collection during their game with Bromley on Tuesday night raised a further Β£1,234, meaning the club are well on their way to achieving the Β£10,000 target.

Club director and chaplain Ian Nicholson, the man who set up the page, told the Guardian: β€œWithin 40 minutes of the first game of this season Scott was stretchered off with ruptured ligaments.

"He needs an immediate operation and will be out for a year. We want to cover the operation, rehab and his wages for the year to enable Scott to fully recover.

β€œThe response through Facebook and Twitter has been fantastic. This is lower league football at its best!"
