Sunderland defender Nordi Mukiele has marked triumph in the Wear-Tyne Derby against Newcastle with a cheeky 'in the pocket' post on social media. The Black Cats maintained their remarkable undefeated Premier League streak against their fiercest rivals, stretching it to 10 matches following a 1-0 win.
Nick Woltemade's unfortunate own goal early in the second period proved decisive between the two teams. The result propels Sunderland past Newcastle in the Premier League standings and into seventh place.
The final whistle at the Stadium of Light sparked jubilant scenes both amongst supporters and players on the field at the Stadium of Light. The Sunderland team got their revenge on Newcastle by arranging their own squad photograph before the supporters, mirroring one captured by Newcastle following their FA Cup triumph nearly two years prior.
Mukiele has posted that image on his X (formerly Twitter) profile, alongside another snap of him in celebration. He also wrote: "HA'WAY THE LADS (red and white heart emojis) DERBY IN THE POCKET."
It was Mukiele who featured in the first-half clash that forced Newcastle centre-back Dan Burn from the field due to injury. The defender received a yellow card for the tackle.
Following the match, Newcastle manager Eddie Howe disclosed that the issue had required Burn's hospitalisation, with the England star experiencing breathing difficulties. "He was struggling to breathe at half-time. It was a big problem," he explained. "Dan Burn has gone to the hospital for a check of his ribs, so hopefully he will be OK."
It wasn't solely that clash where Mukiele wielded considerable influence in the match. The rampaging full-back who delivered the cross into the area for Woltemade's own goal.
He also assumed the role of pantomime baddie for Sunderland throughout the encounter. His theatrics included beckoning to Newcastle's Lewis Hall to rise after a robust tackle.
He was also caught chuckling in the face of Joe Willock after securing a throw-in from his rival. Mukiele was amongst the players embroiled in the fracas during stoppage time, with the defender smirking at an enraged Bruno Guimaraes as the Newcastle midfielder shoved him.
