Marc Guehi to Liverpool transfer collapses as Crystal Palace boss intervenes

Marc Guehi had been determined to join Liverpool in a £35m transfer on deadline day, but Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner did not sanction the move

Marc Guehi has seen his dream deadline day move to Liverpool collapse after Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner put his foot down and blocked the transfer.

England centre-back Guehi, 25, completed his medical with the Premier League champions and was all set to sign on the dotted line after agreeing a deal, only for Palace's deal for the Brighton defender Igor Julio to fall through.

The Eagles did manage to bring in 19-year-old centre-back Jaydee Canvot from Toulouse, but Glasner was desperate to land a more experienced replacement for his captain and insisted that Guehi, who is in the final year of his contract, would not be sold.

Palace chairman Steve Parish was more open to the sale of Guehi, knowing that the club stand to lose him on a free transfer next summer, and a deal sheet was submitted to the Premier League in order to get extended time to complete the transfer.

But Glasner was insistent that Guehi not be sold, and the 23-times capped England international will now stay at Selhurst Park until January at least.

Guehi has been praised for his professionalism throughout the transfer saga, and scored a superb goal as Palace beat Aston Villa 3-0 on Sunday.

Speaking after the match, Glasner said: “He’s so professional and it was clear he would play today,” Glasner said in his post-match press conference before reiterating his desire for Guehi to stay.

“I can say it with clarity, and I said it to the chairman that it’s nothing to do with Oliver Glasner but we need to keep Marc to play a successful season.

“We had a meeting in March where we talked about the situation so again we know how the situation is and we have an agreement that we could sell Marc if we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season to be independent from this situation.

“That was on July 9 (the season started), it’s August 31 and there is no replacement in the building so it’s clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled that means we can’t sell Marc."
