Angel Gomes has already made mind up on Man Utd return amid transfer interest - The Mirror

Former Manchester United starlet Angel Gomes won his first England cap after impressing with Lille and the midfielder has now been linked with a return to the Premier League

Angel Gomes has admitted he would "love" to return to Manchester United one day as Premier League interest in the midfielder grows.

Gomes was just 16 years old when he became United's youngest ever Premier League player in 2017. He played just five top-flight games for his boyhood club, though, and moved to Lille in 2020 after failing to agree a new contract at Old Trafford.

The London-born star has grown into a key player in Ligue 1, and has played more than 100 times for Lille in all competitions. His form in France caught the eye of Lee Carsley, who welcomed Gomes into the England Under-21 fold before handing him a senior debut against Ireland.

Newcastle have reportedly made Gomes their top January target, with interest from elsewhere in the Premier League and beyond. However, back in 2022, Gomes made clear how he feels about a potential second spell with Manchester United.

"Do I imagine myself coming back one day? Obviously, it’s home," Gomes told French outlet L'Equipe, as translated by Metro.

"I would love to come back. But you never know in football. I just have to keep my feet on the ground, and keep playing, making the most of it. I can’t predict what will happen in the future"

Gomes, now 24, is in the final year of his contract at Lille. Scouts from a number of clubs were in position for England's victory over Finland - his first senior start for the Three Lions, but it remains to be seen whether anyone will attempt to test Lille's resolve in January rather than waiting to make a summer move.

Carsley pointed to Gomes' Lille form when explaining his decision to call up the former United starlet, who scored his first Champions League goal in 2021. “Angel is someone who does it week-in, week-out for a team out in France. He is a player that, along with four or five others in the team in central midfield, who is capable of doing that," the interim manager said.

“I’m not sure why he’s not been included previously. I wouldn’t know. I know that the senior staff have watched him and how impressed they were with him from the summer he had with us.

“He’s a player that we’re probably not used to seeing in terms of that kind of player. But yet when we watched a Portugal team or a Spain team: ‘Ah, I really like that No.10. I really like him.’ We’ve got players like that within our pathway that need a chance.

“Angel has had to go to another country to get that. He was such a talent, they had such high hopes for him at Manchester United. He’s just had to find a different route to get to where he is. I expect him to go from strength to strength.”
