SUNDERLAND 1-0 NEWCASTLE: Toon's giant centre-forward put through his own goal just a minute into the second half to give Sunderland all three points and bragging rights in the north east

Sunderland won the first Premier League Wear-Tyne derby since 2016 thanks to Newcastle striker Nick Woltemade's own goal at the Stadium of Light. Toon's giant centre-forward glanced past his own goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale just a minute into the second half.
Nordi Mukiele crossed from the right flank and Woltemade got it all wrong to inexplicably head into his own goal off the underside of the crossbar and send the home stands into raptures.
It came after an uneventful first half which featured just four shots, the lowest in the Premier League in an opening 45 minutes so far this season.
Even after going behind, Newcastle failed to manufacture much in the way of a meaningful attack in what was a typical full-blooded derby high on emotion but low on quality.

But Sunderland won't care. It marked a semblance of revenge for their FA Cup defeat by their fierce rivals in January 2024, 3-0 on their home patch, in the last meeting between the two sides.
The home side rubbed it in by posing for a picture in front of their fans, something Newcastle did when winning that cup tie almost two years ago.
It is also a result that stretches the Black Cats' unbeaten run in Premier League fixtures between these two sides to 10 games. Newcastle last beat them in the league in August 2011.
Sunderland sit seventh in the Premier League, level on points with the Champions League places, four points clear of Newcastle who are 12th.
