Thomas Tuchel is happy leading England towards the World Cup, but the German boss would also be the perfect choice for Manchester United as they look for Ruben Amorim's long-term successor

Thomas Tuchel is the outstanding choice to be the next Manchester United manager. But it feels as if everyone is just afraid to admit it because Tuchelโs No1 priority is being in charge of Englandโs World Cup campaign this summer.
โ
It is certainly a distraction the Football Association could do without ahead of the tournament which Tuchel was brought in to win. And you can bet that Tuchel will not welcome questions on the subject, although he is unlikely to face any sort of media scrutiny until England play next in March.
โ
However, Tuchel fits the United bill because they have made it clear they want a manager with Premier League experience, which is definitely a lesson learned from the whole Ruben Amorim reign. Tuchel is also an outstanding coach with real pedigree, he is highly regarded on the world stage and has experience of managing big clubs.
โ
The German coach led Chelsea to the Champions League and also managed Bayern Munich as well as Paris Saint Germain. You cannot begin to doubt his CV which is very different to someone like Oliver Glasner who is doing a remarkable job at Crystal Palace, leading the club to their first ever major trophy after they lifted the FA Cup.

Glasner could be a huge success but you are into that unknown and risk territory again whereas Tuchel comes with more of a guarantee and experience.
Clearly, United have taken a view on installing a caretaker manager until the summer with Darren Fletcher taking charge of their game at Burnley. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be back at the wheel until the end of the season which feels like a ridiculous and also comedy step back in time.
โ
But that is being done with the clear intention of waiting if necessary for the best candidate and then it is just a question of whether the stars align. It would be naive to suggest that if United went for Tuchel then it would not become a distraction. It never pans out well when there is uncertainty over an England manager going into a tournament.
Tuchel has indicated how happy he is in the role and how much he is enjoying it, even hinting that he would quite fancy a contract beyond his 18 months which expires after the World Cup. Overall, Tuchel has done a great job after leading England to faultless qualifying campaign and they will be among the favourites at the World Cup having already been placed in the top four seeds.
โ
This is a great opportunity for Tuchel and England to deliver something truly unforgettable. It is also once-in-a-lifetime for him so it is hard to believe he would take his eye off the ball. But Tuchel was sounded out by United previously when they opted to stick with Erik ten Hag and any manager would be tempted.
United have issues like many clubs as to whether it is set up for success and the structure. But any manager in world football would sit up and listen if United were interested. And that is why even with the World Cup on the horizon, this is a story which could easily develop.
