Darlington defeated a club from a higher division for the first time since 1998, and boss Mark Cooper now has his sights set on more records.

Gary Smith was the hero with the winning goal after Will Hoskins had brought Rovers level, quickly cancelling out Michael Brough’s opener.

“I was told about Darlington’s failure to do anything in this competition, but records are there to be broken,” said Cooper. “Last week we won at Wimbledon, who hadn’t lost at home before this season, so let’s hope we can keep breaking a few more records.”

Rovers boss Paul Trollope felt his side missed Hoskins after he went off with suspected ankle ligament damage. He said: “When you play a very organised team you need people who can create chances, so we missed Will.”
