Glovers substitute Adam Phillip was denied in stoppage-time by Colchester keeper Ben Williams.

Skiverton said: β€œWe spoke before the game about how we want to move forward and be a lot more solid and cut out the mistakes.

β€Œ

β€œWe did that – it was a really small step, but we’re heading in the right direction.”

After the break Colchester went agonisingly close when Kayode Odejayi saw his close-range effort tipped onto the bar by Yeovil keeper John Sullivan.

Skiverton added: β€œI was really pleased with the response, but I’ve said it before, only for it to be shoved back down my throat again.”

Colchester boss John Ward agreed his players were below par, saying: β€œThis is a performance to forget because we haven’t done as well as could we have. But don’t forget that we were playing a team that was trying to stop us.”
