Colchester boss John Ward paid tribute to his side’s attitude after they secured a comfortable victory.

David Mooney fired the U’s into an early lead at the Colchester Community Stadium, before Anthony Wordsworth and Magnus Okuonghae made it 3-0 by the 31st minute.

Wordsworth missed an 80th-minute penalty prior to Enoch Showunmi’s strike, which proved to be nothing more than a consolation.

“I am absolutely delighted with the team and with their attitude, which was spot on throughout the game,” said Ward.

“We’ve probably not played as well as we had in the three drawn matches at home earlier in the season, but we had really good chances to extend the lead.

“I am really pleased with my team and the way they went about their game.”

Tranmere boss Les Parry has challenged his players to learn from the defeat. “Our young players have to learn from this and if they don’t, then they will be playing in the halfway house next season,” he admitted.
