Nicky Bailey grabbed the winning goal as promotion-chasing Charlton closed the gap on leaders Leeds with a hard-fought victory.

The Addicks took an early lead through Jonjo Shelvey but were pegged back by Jon-Paul Pittman's second-half strike.

Bailey had the final say, however, as he thumped a powerful shot past Scott Shearer at his near post.

Stuart Beavon and Pittman had chances for Wycombe early on, but both failed to hit the target with shots from inside the penalty area.

The Addicks responded by taking the lead with their first meaningful attack.

Lloyd Sam delivered a cross from the right and Shelvey was on hand to drill the ball into the bottom-left corner in the 11th minute.

Wycombe goalkeeper Shearer denied David Mooney soon afterwards as Charlton looked to double their lead. Bailey and Deon Burton also went close for Phil Parkinson's side in the first half, while Chris Westwood warmed the palms of visiting goalkeeper Rob Elliot with a left-footed shot from 12 yards.

Shearer was called into action again early in the second half to tip a 20-yarder from Mooney around the post.

But Wycombe levelled in the 64th minute as Pittman allowed the ball to run across his body before lifting a shot into the far corner.

Impressive The goal was no less than the hosts deserved, but Charlton responded well to the setback with substitute Chris Dickson bringing another save from the impressive Shearer in the 72nd minute.

However, there was nothing Shearer could do five minutes later as midfielder Bailey drilled home his 10th goal of the season to put the Addicks back in front.

Adam Hinshelwood had a chance to bring Wycombe level for a second time late on, but he failed to trouble Elliot with a header from 12 yards, allowing Charlton to maintain the gap to second-placed Norwich.
