Kevin Pietersen has not been granted his wish to play against England for the Prime Minister's XI, after Chris Rogers was selected instead.

England are due to play a warm-up match against the one-off squad on Wednesday - and Pietersen had hoped to receive a controversial call-up to face his former team-mates.

Mike Hussey, who was due to captain the Prime Minister's XI, is missing the game through injury, opening up a spot in the team.

And Pietersen was hoping for a reunion with England - but on the opposing side.

South African-born Pietersen was unceremoniously dropped by the England selectors following the 5-0 Ashes whitewash in Australia last year, and now he would have relished the chance to face them this week.

But Tony Abbott instead selected Rogers to fill the void in the squad.

Pietersen, 34, was on player mic during his Big Bash game for Melbourne Stars and revealed during the game that he would have been interested in the opportunity to be in the team.

Talking to Adam Gilchrist in the commentary box, he said: β€œIn the Prime Minister’s game on Wednesday, Mr Michael Hussey’s missed out. Jeez, I fancy that.”

β€Œ

Gilchrist said: β€œAre you telling us you are available?”

Pietersen replied: β€œMate, I’m always available.”

Controversial Pietersen still has the hope of one day featuring for England again and put his name in the hat for selection for the upcoming World Cup.
