GOLDEN oldie Steve Davis reached the 99th major final of his career as he beat Marco Fu 6-3 in the Welsh Open semi-finals in Cardiff yesterday.
Davis has won 73 titles - 28 of them in ranking events - of the 98 previous finals he has reached. He beat Mark King, John Higgins and Alan McManus in the earlier rounds of the event, being held at the Welsh Institute For Sport.
At times it was vintage snooker from Davis who compiled a break of 105 to lead 4-2. He also weighed in with an 80 and a 55.
But Davis was also on edge at times as the strain of reaching his first final since the 1995 International at Bournemouth, produced some uncharacteristic shots from the six-time world champion.
Fu, who had beaten holder Stephen Hendry in the quarter-finals and Jimmy White in the last 16, was never able to show the consistency displayed in those matches.
